Re-energizing a Brand’s Presence
In 2017, Dan Wangelin connected with Luke Marchiori as they both completed a business development program through The UB Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. Luke represented EnergyMark, a local energy service company helping Western New Yorkers save money on their utility bills. As a result of that relationship, when EnergyMark was ready to overhaul their brand presence, we were invited to pitch – and ultimately selected over some formidable local competition.
EnergyMark was looking to dramatically revamp their visual brand identity, improve their website to promote operational efficiency, all while combating consumer apathy and misinformation surrounding energy supply and cost savings through various kinds of content. We ultimately developed a new marketing strategy focused on attracting new residential customers and commercial leads, leveraging a new website with improved functionality and robust educational resources to support their rapid growth.

Clarity and Trustworthiness in an Ever Changing Industry
In order to bring clarity to EnergyMark’s service offerings, we updated their visual brand identity. Starting with their existing logo, we improved the layout and spacing to enhance legibility, created a complete suite of alternate versions for various uses, and updated their tagline to reflect the breadth of services they offer. Finally, to address the growing demand of the emerging community solar market, we created a completely new sub-brand visual identity.
A key challenge for EnergyMark’s brand is earning potential customers’ trust in a market saturated with scammers. To combat this, we helped EnergyMark focus on proactive, no-nonsense transparency. This includes includes having photos and biographies of the leadership team available on the website, online tools to enable customers to discover their rates, frequent engagement with the media, regular participation in industry forums, and charitable contributions to local and regional organizations.

We redesigned the EnergyMark website primarily to alleviate the operational inefficiency of managing residential service signups by phone. The new site acts as a tool for consumer education using custom infographics, and when they’re ready to buy, a vehicle for self-service account connection. Now, almost all residential signups flow through the website, and commercial prospects have a direct channel to engage with the sales team. Additionally, EnergyMark achieved the number one Google ranking locally, regionally, and nationally for all energy supply companies, a major factor in adding over 2,000 new customers over a 2 year period.

We created a robust integrated marketing plan to attract new customers and commercial prospects for EnergyMark, deploying multiple methods of content creation and distribution including email, video, and streaming radio. We produced educational animations, infographics, rate reports, and social media content. We also manage EnergyMark’s PR around major business wins as well as their sponsorships with major partners including the Buffalo Bills.

We crafted strategy, created content for, and executed multi-channel paid digital ad campaigns on social media and search for both residential and commercial audiences. Offers for each of these customer groups ranged from annual savings on natural gas and electricity, to sustainability and energy infrastructure improvement. We leveraged organic social media posts to educate consumers about how energy supply companies work, and promote community partnerships to help build trust and credibility as well as improve recognition of EnergyMark as a local and regional brand.
